This is a four person collaboration setup. All four users computers are connected to a UNIX host system. The host system is a SUN SPARC station running the Conference Server and CU-SeeMe Reflector applications. The connections are made using the internet. The four users are also connected on a standard audio conference call. The user who is originating the live video has a camera and video digitizer card installed in his computer.
Business Situation: One Business Four locations
A large manufacturing company has several locations and is in the process of designing a new product. Engineers and designers in four of the locations need to collaborate on the design.
Customer Need: Electronic Whiteboard And Document Sharing Workspace With A Live Video Broadcast.
The customer needs an electronic document conferencing system that will operate between all of its locations. They would also like the ability to broadcast live video of the prototype from one of their locations to all of the other locations.
Solution: The Virtual Meeting Standard Edition with the CU-SeeMe Video conferencing system.
CU-SeeMe software which is supplied with The Virtual Meeting allows a user with an inexpensive camera and video capture board to broadcast live video over a Local or Wide Area Network or the internet. In many cases these video broadcasts can be made without adversely affecting network performance.
The Virtual Meeting adds multimedia teleconferencing capabilities to the system. Electronic presentations can be given using the QuickTime Movie and Slide Player or the WhiteBoard can be used to provide a shared workspace where drawing can be done in real time. The Whiteboard can also be used to view and annotate documents that have been created with any other applications like word processors , spreadsheets, databases, etc.
Meetings using The Virtual Meeting Standard Edition with CU-SeeMe maximizes resources by eliminating the need for expensive hardware. The camera and video digitizing card used with CU-SeeMe costs less than $500 for each location which originates live video.
